In 1974, 24-year-old Vincent Musarra bought out his father to become the owner of their family dry-cleaning business. As time went on and Vincent's reputation grew, people began coming to him requesting large scale pressing and steaming jobs.
An owner of a small garment warehouse who had received 500 silk blouses contacted him. At this time manufacturers started making silk in China in unsophisticated factories where they were unable to ship hanging goods. The blouses were received in cartons and needed to be steamed.
Vincent, eager to take on a challenge, got some workers together, started steaming, and worked all through the night. The man, very pleased with the quality of work and fast turn around time, gave Vincent another job; 3,300 silk dresses. After another successful completion, they worked out a schedule and continued to do business for about eight months.
When the building became available next door to the dry cleaner, Vincent knew this was an opportunity he needed to take. He took the space, put a driver on, and started picking up goods during the day. They would bring the goods back, get them unpackaged, on racks, and ready to roll over to the dry cleaners once they closed. After working in the shop at night, the goods were brought back to the other side during the day to then be packaged and sent back out.
After figuring out a system the business continued to flourish. Vincent, always looking for the next thing to take on, wound up working for one of the very few mail order companies in the 80's, handling all returns for pressing, steaming, repackaging, etc. An entrepreneur from the start, this was only the beginning of what was to become The Apparel Group.
By 1993 the small town dry cleaning shop was no longer big enough and The Apparel Group opened in a 40,000 square foot facility in Passaic, New Jersey. Within about two years the amount of business coming in exceeded the amount of space yet again, and Vincent leased another 25,000 square feet from next door.
By 1997 The Apparel Group prepared for another big move. Vincent found a building that had once been a very successful dye house in Haledon, New Jersey. He was able to meet with the trustees of the building to make a deal to lease and purchase it. After eight months of developing the perfect flow throughout, construction on the 122,000 square foot building was complete.
In the late 90's The Apparel Group took in a client to recycle plastic hangers. Over the years the account grew so large that a subsidiary was opened in an 89,000 square foot building in Garfield, New Jersey. The Hanger Clinic has expanded The Apparel Group into the plastic hanger recycling business.
Throughout the years The Apparel Group has also worked with many t-shirt companies, including major children wear companies and leading brand adult companies. This led into partnership with a screen-printing company, TeeFX.
Today, The Apparel Group still operates out of Haledon, New Jersey. From one tiny dry cleaner, The Apparel Group has grown into a top problem solving facility for the fashion and apparel industry. It offers an extensive range of services and always an unparalleled commitment to fixing your merchandise.
